In December 2020, Apple TV+ set out to adapt one of the decade's most talked-about science fiction novels: Blake Crouch's 2016 bestseller Dark Matter. Four years later, the series arrived with Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly anchoring a story about a Chicago physicist abducted into an alternate version of his own life. Crouch didn't hand the book off to a writers' room — he stayed on as creator, showrunner, and head writer, which is part of why Season 1 tracks so closely with the novel.
Season 1: What Happened
Jason Dessen (Edgerton) is a physics professor who traded ambition for family years earlier. That choice comes back to haunt him when he's abducted by a masked figure and wakes up in a world where he never married his wife Daniela (Connelly) or had a son — and instead built a Nobel-caliber career around an invention called the Box, a device that lets its occupant travel between parallel realities. The culprit is Jason himself: an alternate version, "Jason #02," who chose the career path and has now stolen Jason's family.
Over nine episodes, Jason and Velocity Labs psychiatrist Amanda Lucas (Alice Braga) fight through an infinite corridor of doors trying to get him home, while Jason #02 quietly unravels the family life he stole and Daniela grows suspicious of the man sleeping in her bed. The season ends — as the novel does — with the real Dessens fleeing into an unfamiliar new reality, leaving both Jasons' worlds behind.
The scariest villain in Dark Matter isn't a monster from another world — it's the version of yourself who made a different choice.
Season 2: The New Chapter
Season 2 picks up nearly two years later, premiering August 28, 2026. It's uncharted territory: the novel never had a sequel, so Crouch built an original story from scratch — reportedly conceived as the middle chapter of a planned three-season arc. The Dessens have finally settled into a version of life that feels safe, but it doesn't last. Jason's fixation on the Box resurfaces, Daniela's paranoia escalates, and the story splits into multiple threads for the first time: Amanda and Ryan Holder (Jimmi Simpson) join forces to find their way home, while Leighton Vance (Dayo Okeniyi) — whose secret Box trips were hinted at all through Season 1 — pursues a plan to engineer a "perfect world," with Blair Caplan (Amanda Brugel) trying to stop him. Chris Diamantopoulos joins this season as a federal agent circling the Dessens' secret.
Should You Watch It?
With Season 2 airing now, the show is testing whether an original sequel can match the tight, book-bound plotting that made the first run work. For newcomers, Season 1 is a nine-episode binge; for returning fans, catching up now means watching in near-real time with everyone else for the first time in the show's run.
