Lanterns arrived on HBO in the middle of August as the quietest big swing in James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe. Instead of a cosmic team-up, it dropped Hal Jordan and rookie recruit John Stewart into a small Midwestern town to work a murder that looks a lot more earthbound than intergalactic — at least at first. Built by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, the show leaned into procedural, character-first storytelling rather than spectacle, and it split critics and longtime fans right down the middle over that choice.
Eight episodes later, the mystery that opened the season has closed, but the show's future is still an open question. Here's a full rundown of Season 1 and everything reported so far about a possible Season 2.
Season 1: The Setup
The premise is simple on paper: Hal Jordan, an aging, weathered Green Lantern, is ordered to train John Stewart, a new recruit, right as a string of killings in rural Nebraska starts looking less like a local crime spree and more like something alien. The two are mismatched on purpose — Jordan is burnt out and set in his ways, Stewart is sharp, disciplined, and skeptical of the whole Corps — and the show spends most of its runtime on that friction rather than on ring-slinging set pieces.
Along the way, the season digs into both men's family histories. Flashbacks to a young John Stewart Sr. and a young Bernadette Stewart, John's parents, run underneath the present-day investigation and end up mattering just as much to the finale as the murder plot itself. Mundy has described the season as a closed-ended mystery — a complete story rather than the first chapter of something ongoing — which is part of why a second season isn't automatic.

HBO ran the season the old-fashioned way — one episode a week on Sunday nights, simulcast on HBO Max, rather than a binge-model drop. Only the premiere carries an official title so far ("Pilot"); HBO hasn't published individual names for episodes two through eight, so they're tracked by number for now.

Season 2: What We Know
As of this writing, HBO has not officially ordered a second season. That said, the show has clearly been moving in that direction behind the scenes. Damon Lindelof told press at the premiere that Mundy had already started a new writers' room to explore future storylines, and Christopher Cantwell — the Halt and Catch Fire co-creator — has since confirmed he's joined as a co-showrunner alongside Mundy for whatever comes next.
The cast, for its part, isn't shy about wanting more. Nicholson has pointed to the show's opening-weekend viewership as reason enough for a renewal, and both he and Cephas Jones have talked about wanting to dig further into John Stewart Sr. and Bernadette's backstory rather than just the cosmic side of the mythology.
Mundy has been more measured about timing, saying publicly that the writers' room is still in the early "breaking story" stage and that any second season depends on how audiences respond to the first. Lindelof and King are reportedly stepping back from day-to-day writing duties for a follow-up season, handing more of that work to Cantwell while Mundy remains showrunner.
The Bottom Line
Lanterns closed its first season as a complete story, which is rarer than it sounds for a franchise launch — and it's part of why Season 2 isn't a guarantee yet, even with a writers' room already circling ideas. If it does move forward, expect more time with John Stewart Sr.'s past and Bernadette's origins, alongside whatever comes next for Stewart and Jordan themselves. We'll update this page as HBO makes anything official.
