Apple TV+'s Silo has spent three seasons asking the same question from different angles: who built this thing, and why won't they say so? What started as a locked-room murder mystery 144 levels underground has widened, season by season, into a centuries-spanning conspiracy — and as of the Season 3 finale on September 4, 2026, it has officially become something else entirely: a war. Before Season 4 arrives to close it out, here's everything that's happened, level by level.

Level 01

Season One — The Cleaning

Premiered May 5, 2023

Everyone in the Silo has lived their entire life underground, told that the air outside is toxic and the world above is dead. The one window they have onto it is a bank of external cameras — and the one way anyone ever gets a closer look is by being sentenced to "cleaning": sent outside in a hazard suit to wipe the camera lenses, and to die shortly after from the poisoned air. No one who's ever been sent out has come back. No one has ever asked to go, either — until Sheriff Holston Becker does, three years after his wife Allison was cleaned for the same crime: saying out loud that she wanted to leave.

Juliette Nichols and Deputy Billings, working a murder that everyone else wants closed.

Holston's cleaning leaves the sheriff's office empty, and it's filled — reluctantly — by Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson), a mechanic from the Silo's Down Deep with no interest in politics and no patience for the people who have it. Juliette starts pulling on a thread that was supposed to stay buried: the death of her former partner, engineer George Wilkins, ruled an accident but clearly a murder, tied to a stash of banned pre-uprising technology he'd been hiding.

Her investigation collides with Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins), head of IT and the Silo's true power broker, who is guarding a much bigger secret than one murder: the "Pact," a founding document that governs everything from what can be built to what can be said, and a hidden history of past uprisings that were erased from the record entirely. Juliette discovers that the visors used in past cleanings were coated with a resin that kept them from fogging — meaning some of the condemned may have lived far longer outside than anyone was ever told.

"I want to go outside."

Holston Becker, the line that starts everything

Bernard has her arrested and, with the Judicial branch stacked against her, sentenced to a cleaning of her own. Season 1 ends with Juliette walking out the airlock in a suit rigged with an improved visor coating she developed with mechanic Walker's help — leaving it genuinely unclear, for the first time in the Silo's history, whether a person sent out to die might actually survive.

Season Two — What's Outside

Premiered November 15, 2024

Juliette in a hazard suit standing in a barren landscape outside the Silo Juliette walking through the ruined, flooded tunnels of a collapsed silo

Left: what "outside" actually looks like. Right: what's buried in it.

Juliette survives — but what she finds outside isn't the clean, dead wasteland the Silo has been shown for generations. Instead she stumbles onto the ruins of Silo 17, a neighboring silo that failed catastrophically and now sits half-collapsed and flooded, its levels littered with the skeletons of everyone who lived there. Inside, she meets Solo (Steve Zahn), the sole survivor, who has spent decades alone keeping the lights on for no one. Through him, Juliette learns the truth is bigger than one silo: there are, or were, fifty of them, built and buried side by side, each running the same rules under the same silence.

Back home, Silo 18 doesn't wait for her. Bernard consolidates power as mayor, and Robert Sims (Common) enforces it, but the mechanics and their allies — Deputy Billings among them — have had enough of IT deciding who lives, who's exiled, and what counts as the truth. What begins as quiet resistance curdles into open rebellion by the season's back half, splitting the Silo along the same fault line that's always been there: Down Deep versus the top.

Season 2, on the scale of the lie

The season's final minutes detonate the whole premise. Without warning, the show jumps out of the Silo entirely and into what looks like our own present day, introducing Congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) and journalist Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) — strangers to everything we've watched, connected only by an old Pez dispenser that will somehow resurface three hundred years later, inside a silo neither of them has any reason to know exists yet.

Season Three — The Before Times

Premiered July 3, 2026

Left: the Season 3 pitch in one image. Right: Helen Drew and Daniel Keene, before any of them knew what a silo was.

Season 3 finally answers the "who" and "why" behind the entire project, splitting its ten episodes evenly between two timelines. In the present, Juliette survives her own cleaning but comes back with her memory in pieces, right as Silo 18 is trying to recover from the rebellion and hold together a fragile new order. In the past, Daniel Keene and Helen Drew keep pulling on the Pez-dispenser thread from the Season 2 finale, uncovering a government conspiracy that's building toward something engineered to look like the end of the world.

The two timelines finally meet in the finale, and not gently. Helen is lured into entering what becomes Silo 18, sealed inside as one of its earliest occupants. Daniel is taken to Silo 1 in the chaos of a nuclear detonation timed to the project's unveiling — and wakes up, centuries later, as someone else entirely: "Troy," a cryo-preserved operative kept on ice until a silo needs a problem handled without hesitation. Under the direction of a handler named Victor (Matt Craven), Troy is sent to put down the uprising in Silo 17 — the same disaster Juliette found the wreckage of back in Season 2 — with a brutality the Daniel we knew would never have been capable of.

"The end of the world cannot be stopped. It can only be survived."

He surfaces just enough, in flickers, to ask Victor questions about a woman he can't fully place — Helen — before he's put back under. And in the episode's last turn, we learn Victor is also the unseen voice who talked Camille through quelling the uprising back in Silo 18, tying Silo 1's hidden hand directly to everything Juliette has lived through. By the end of it, Juliette isn't just trying to survive anymore. She knows Silo 1 is real, knows it's the center of the whole system, and wants it gone.

Season Four — It's War

Expected 2027 — the final season

No key art has been released yet for Season 4 — but showrunner Graham Yost hasn't been shy about what it's going to be. Asked to sum up the final season in as few words as possible, he gave three: "It's war." Filmed back-to-back with Season 3 and already wrapped, Season 4 will adapt Dust, the final book in Hugh Howey's trilogy, and closes the gap between the two timelines for good — Juliette and the people of Silo 18 preparing to move against Silo 1, while the season spends real time inside Silo 1 itself for the first time, bringing background players "up into the fore," in Yost's words.

Yost has described it as a season that's "full-on Juliette from the first frame... to essentially the final one" — a deliberate reversal after a Season 3 that spent much of its runtime in the past. Don't expect a clean alliance in Silo 18 either: Juliette, Camille, Robert, Knox, Shirley, and Sheriff Billings are united against a common enemy, but Yost has warned there's "stuff that needs to be sorted out" between them before the fight is over. Ashley Zukerman, who plays Daniel/Troy, has promised the season answers nearly everything left hanging — including Helen's fate — calling it "so much more complicated than you could have imagined."
